Home Outage Plan

Generator backup

A portable generator runs on gasoline or propane outdoors. You run heavy-duty extension cords from it to your items. It keeps going as long as you can refuel it safely.

When it fits

  • Outages that last days.
  • Homes with a safe outdoor spot at least 20 feet from doors, windows and vents.
  • Households that can store fuel safely.

When it does not

Apartments and condos, homes without a safe outdoor spot, and anyone who cannot store fuel safely. The planner removes generators in those cases.

Our listing rule

We list only generators whose manufacturer states an automatic carbon monoxide shutoff meeting ANSI/PGMA G300-2023 or UL 2201, the standards the CPSC points to. Other generators may be good products; we leave them out until we can verify that.
